怀着对已故母亲黑崎真咲 （长泽雅美饰）的思念，15岁的高中生黑崎一护 （福士苍汰饰）与父亲黑崎一心 （江口洋介饰）以及两个年幼的妹妹生活在一起。除了能够看见幽灵外，黑崎一护一直过着普通的生活。一天晚上，自称“死神”的少女朽木露琪亚 （杉咲花饰）突然在他眼前出现。被称为“虚”的恶灵袭击了一护的家人，朽木露琪亚救助了他们，但她在战斗中受了重伤，处于濒死状态。在绝望的关头，她将本不可以分给人类的死神力量通过斩魄刀注入进了黑崎一护体内。成为死神的黑崎一护击败了虚，但露琪亚几乎失去了死神之力。于是，她决定在力量恢复之前，扮成黑崎一护的同学，并迫使一护担任死神代理。一天，黑崎一护的同班同学、唯一幸存的灭却师石田雨龙 （吉泽亮）找到了黑崎一护，他十分仇恨死神，于是和黑崎一护展开了战斗。与此同时，大量虚出现在了一护所在空座町，一护和雨龙开始并肩驱除虚。神秘店长浦原喜助 （田边诚一饰）预感到了虚的出现，同时，黑崎一护的同学井上织姬 （真野惠里菜饰）和茶渡泰虎 （小柳友饰）也拥有了特殊力量。杀害黑崎一护母亲的极恶大虚“Grand Fisher”出现在了一护和露琪亚面前，两人正准备战斗时，死神阿散井恋次 （早乙女太一饰）和朽木白哉 （石原贵雅饰）为了逮捕露琪亚而出现 。

从小异于常人的黑崎一护，在一次机缘巧合下遭遇女死神“朽木露琪亚”。 露琪亚是将灵魂从现实世界引领到尸魂界的收魂者之一，他们为保护人类不被“虚” 侵害，一直在与这些怪物战斗。　　在与一只异常强大的“虚” 战斗时，露琪亚身负重伤，无奈只能将死神的力量暂时转给黑崎一护，让其代为战斗。两人经过一段时间的磨合后并肩战斗，终于战胜了当年害死一护母亲的“虚”，但在这期间，露琪亚的兄长朽木白哉强迫她不顾黑崎一护的生命安危收回法力。露琪亚为保护一护，拖延到与“虚”的战斗结束，并清除了一护的记忆……
